Two Records Built Beastie Boys' "Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun." Here Is How to Buy Both.

SAMPLE DNA · November 3, 2026

Paul's Boutique came out July 25, 1989 on Capitol, and the Dust Brothers built it almost entirely from other people's records. Wikipedia counts 105 songs sampled across the album. "Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun" is one of the sparse ones. The Vinyl Factory credits it with just two records: the Incredible Bongo Band's "Last Bongo in Belgium" and Mountain's "Mississippi Queen." Some fan guides list extra fragments, and the sources disagree on them, so we are sticking to the two everyone names. Our video on this track passed 150,000 views across platforms. This is the buying guide, and it pairs with our Beastie Boys page.

Record one: "Last Bongo in Belgium"

It is track four on Bongo Rock (1973, Pride/MGM), a studio project Michael Viner started in 1972 while working at MGM Records. The track runs 6:55 and is credited to Perry Botkin Jr. and Viner. The same album holds the band's "Apache," one of the best-known breakbeats in hip-hop, which is why the whole LP gets mined. The fan site Paul's Boutique Info lists "Last Bongo in Belgium" as the main beat of the Beastie Boys track.

Record two: "Mississippi Queen"

Mountain's "Mississippi Queen" opens Climbing!, released March 7, 1970 on Windfall Records. Leslie West played guitar and sang, Felix Pappalardi produced and played bass, and Corky Laing was on drums. Discogs lists plenty of Climbing! pressings, including US Windfall copies, UK Bell copies, and reissues from Friday Music (2017) and Music On Vinyl (2023).

Our call

Buy Climbing! used. It is the cheapest half of this sample and the one with the most pressings to choose from, so match your label to a Discogs entry before you pay. For Bongo Rock, the new Deluxe 40th Anniversary edition at about $26 is the low-risk buy; the 1973 original costs collector money, and we would only pay it for a clean copy. If you want the album both records ended up on, Paul's Boutique runs about $30 new. That is taste and price, not a pressing comparison; we have not A/B tested these copies. More Beastie Boys digging is on our Isaac Hayes post and the Beastie Boys page.
