Four Tommy Boy castoffs invented horrorcore, and RZA was in the group before most people knew his name.

Gravediggaz were Prince Paul, RZA, Frukwan and Poetic, four artists who had all been dropped or sidelined by Tommy Boy and turned that grievance into a record. 6 Feet Deep landed August 9, 1994 on Gee Street and effectively invented horrorcore as a commercial proposition, though calling it a horror record undersells it. The graveyard imagery is a vehicle for satire aimed squarely at the industry that had just discarded them, and the jokes land.

The production split is what collectors care about. Prince Paul handled the majority of the album and RZA produced three tracks, including "Nowhere to Run, Nowhere to Hide." This was 1994, the same year as the early Wu-Tang solo run, so 6 Feet Deep sits inside RZA's most productive stretch and almost never gets counted in it. Prince Paul and Frukwan had both come out of Stetsasonic, which explains the record's crate-dug looseness underneath the grime.

Supply is good right now, which is not always true of 1994 hip-hop. The album has been repressed repeatedly, including Record Store Day and limited colored variants, so there is a real in-print entry point alongside the original Gee Street US pressing. Two things to check. The European edition was issued under a different and deliberately provocative title, so some European copies look like a separate record entirely and get priced as though they are. And several reissues carry label imprints other than Gee Street, so confirm which pressing a listing actually describes before paying original-pressing money for it.
